Acimowin pronounced “Ah Chee Moh Win” means to share a legend, story for the purpose of sharing an important teaching. Our people did not have any formal written language until approximately 150 years ago. We had our medicine writing, but that style of writing was heavily symbolic. The priests of the Anglican Ministry developed a written language based on the Cree Pronunciations, this is how Syllabics was born, and this is how that came into being.
Prior to the written language, we shared our culture, teachings, religion, beliefs and traditional knowledge through a process called acimowin. This process was handed down from one generation to the next and is still practised today. Our history of who we are, where we came from and where we are going has all been based on this acimowin process, a verbal sharing of that sacred knowledge. Today, I try to present in a modern form of that process telling our stories in a modern way to a modern world. Thank you for your time.
